Marine Mammal Observers

A Marine Mammal Observer is a biologist specialized in the visual detection of marine mammals and protected species during research or industry related studies. In the particular case of the offshore industry, the role of the MMO is mainly associated with mitigating the potential impacts of anthropogenic activities on marine mammals. This is achieved by implementing a set of measurements in real time.

The functions of the MMO include:

  • Visual monitoring of marine mammals and protected species during daylight hours with the help of binoculars.
  • Completion of forms with data referring to the sightings, hours of observation, position of the vessel, environmental variables and seismic operations.
  • Implementation of the mitigation measures required according to the project and the work area.
  • Development  of periodic and final reports.
  • Provide advice and general guidance on minimizing the impacts of industrial activity on protected species.

We offer MMOs with the following training:

  • Bachelor’s degree, MSc or PhD in Biological Sciences.
  • PSO / MMO certificate, approved by BOEM, with instruction in Southwest Atlantic species by Argentina MMO
  • Safety certificate on board ships STCW / 78 approved by P.N.A.
